Elijah was a favorite of the unclaimed strays in the shelter. But when he tested positive for heartworm, they knew he did not have much of a chance at getting adopted from there. The shelter did not have the funds to have him treated, nor did they want him to live in a kennel for the month it would take for his treatment. He is living in a home now and will have the treatment as soon as he has put on a little more weight.
Elijah is housebroke and likes his crate for his naps. He gets along well with other dogs of all ages and sizes but he does seem to dislike large black male dogs. He is fine with large males of other colors and large black females so there is probably some “history” to this aversion that no one will ever know.
For a large dog, he is a very easy foster dog because he is affectionate but not overly demanding. He never jumps on people and he is calm and quiet so there are times when you hardly notice he is even there! He definitely is going to be worth the time and trouble to treat him and find him a new home.
Please consider donating money for his treatment as he is a large dog and the cost is much higher for the treatment of the large breeds. E-mail julemson@wmol.com for more info!
UPDATE 8/15/08
Elijah has completed his heartworm treatment and his blood values were re-run this week. Everything is perfectly in line with normal values so he is ready for his new home!!!! He now weighs 114 pounds!!!
New things we have learned about him during his time with us:
Elijah does not do well with large male dogs but he gets along fine with small dogs of any gender and large female dogs.
He loves to go for car rides or for walks -- he needs a little work at walking properly on a leash because he does get excited and runs around and around his walker sometimes. He also loves attention and will plant his head in your lap if he thinks it is time for some petting or he will lean against you if you are standing up.
Elijah has some fears. If someone raises their voice, he will go and hide in a crate. If you reach for his collar suddenly, even if you have a leash in your hand to put on him, he cowers and tries to run away.
Elijah has been a JOY to foster and to watch him gain weight, gain energy and also gain some confidence.
