Gideon would like to say a few words…but he is deaf…so I, foster mom, will speak for him…on this occasion…because rest assured, this deaf boy definitely has a voice.
Gideon came into APB when his “owner” saw a Great Dane owner doing a transport for another dog and he basically asked the Dane owner “Will you take him? It will save me a bullet”
And..no…I am not kidding.
You see, this person probably bought this beautiful, and I mean beautiful, puppy as a youngster and he may not even have known that he was deaf, but regardless, he is, and this gentleman was NOT a GENTLE anything with Gideon for the last 6 months or so. He was obviously kenneled, as he has zero house manners. :( He was obviously hit, and probably with hats, because he is hand shy at times, and he hates anyone in a hat or hood (and sometimes even glasses) scare him.
Unfortunately because of this history of Gideons, we now have a VERY sweet, very loving, very adorable puppy, who is a monster dog. :( ha ha.
He is getting much better in the short time we have had him, but he will absolutely require a home with giant experience, and either a special new owner or one with deaf dog experience. Gideon is now basically a baby dog in a huge unruly body. :(
We know that had it not been for us, Gideon would be dead today, and we are determined to turn this unruly monster of a pup into a handsome, well behaved Gorgeous example of the Dane breed.
Gideon is doing well on his hand signal commands. He does know Sit, Down, Out, and come. But…he is still selective when actually following the command. :)
Gideon is 99% housetrained already, once he knows how to tell you he has to go out, he will be 100%. He has only had two accidents and those were both when his tummy wasn’t feeling well.
He will go in his crate willingly…but he makes the most awful noises once in it. HE does settle down, but he really does not like to be left alone.
Unfortunately he will also counter surf…and we’re still trying to figure out how to train that out of him, when he cannot hear us.
Gideon is doing wonderfully on his leash manners, he will walk like a total gentleman! (but hang on going out of the house!)
A Fenced yard (actual fencing) is Mandatory for Gideon’s new home. We have learned that he will Bolt if given the opportunity. (time…time and more time will cure this)
Gideon is great with his family, he is good with children, but he is very, very, rude with his size still, so he will not go to a home with children under 8.
Lastly, Gideon is WONDERFUL with ALL dogs and cats. He is the most easy going Dane I have ever had. He is grumbly around his food dish, but other than that, he lets the poodle snap at him and he could care less. A great pick for a multi-dog home!!
We are still trying to learn his quirks about strangers, as he likes some and barks mad at others…stay tuned.
If you think you have the Time, Patience, Heart and Love to give to this boy, Please email julemson@wmol.com for more information and to talk about bringing Gideon into your home.
