Toby was found running as a stray with no identification. When no one claimed him, he was accepted by APB and was neutered and started on a vaccination schedule. Toby currently resides in a foster home with three older dogs, who are permanent residents.
Toby is a very sweet dog. His foster mom, who found him, initially thought that he would need a large amount of exercise to be happy. He is, however, doing quite well with a few walks each day out in the backyard on a no-pull harness, and an hour or so a day of indoor supervised play with the other dogs. Toby has been sleeping in an open crate on an unheated front porch; now that the weather is changing, he will be spending more time inside with the other dogs, working on house training and appropriate indoor behavior.
Toby loves other dogs and other dogs love him. He gets a lot of attention from his foster sister, a senior lab mix, who loves to correct him whenever he is called down on something. He does chase cats and should not be left unsupervised around cats. Overall, however, Toby's favorite indoor activity is sitting in front of his foster mom, and he would definitely like to have a person of his own.
Toby's foster mom would like to see him in a home with an owner who likes to take long walks or runs, and who wants a great dog by his or her side. He would also like to help make dinner, work on the computer, watch TV, and sleep in his own bed or in his owner's bed at night. A good fenced-in yard and another dog as a day-time companion would be even better.
Toby has had only brief contact with children in his foster home; he does tend to jump up, which might frighten a smaller child. He occasionally has barked at a squirrel, and he made a lot of noise when the furnace man came to the front door, but otherwise, Toby is a quiet, rather calm dog.
Toby's foster mom believes he would be best for someone who has had some experience with dogs, and his new owner needs to realize that Toby will probably chase after rabbits or squirrels if allowed off leash. At the same time, Toby is an intelligent and loving dog, very capable of learning, and ready now to make the right person his best friend.
